HOW DO YOU EQUATE ART?
I just finished looking at, and listening to a flash mob of an orchestra that is all over the internet now, playing a piece by Ravel called “Bolero”, and when it finished, I felt so empty because it was over. And people who were in this Copenhagen train station had looks of loss as well. I don’t know about you, but when art is cooking, whether it be an art exhibit you’re at, or a concert or a play or a hot comedian or a movie you loved…anything that transported you away for a little, or soothed your soul, or touched you for the better, how can you measure that? You can’t! Because it’s life itself.
I always vowed, in my personal Mission Statement that I would aim to touch, move and make a difference in people’s lives. This was terribly important to me to give back what I’d received from others, to move as I had been moved. Once this had to be accomplished by acting and singing. Now it has to do with words on paper.
This sorry world and the horrible state it’s in right now is in DIRE need of your talents, my artistic friend. I know you must be aware of the gifts you could bring to change lives in dramatic ways. Don’t ever think that what you have to give is not worth it. Don’t ever! You have no idea how valuable the talents you possess are to this bleeding planet. Just to watch a flash mob infiltrate a train station where unsuspecting folks are busily going about their daily lives, only to be stopped in their tracks by beauty! What about the guy who paints these incredible sidewalk 3D paintings! Don’t for a moment think that doesn’t do something to those who see, hear, are exposed to…
I’ve said all this before about what your art means to the world, but I’m saying it again because I’m still deeply moved by this performance of an orchestra bringing all the instruments and setting up to play one piece in a train station….no one is getting paid to do this, as far as I know – that is, in terms of money. But the payoff IS looks on people’s faces, and the knowledge that you’ve touched them in some very meaningful way. I mean, do you think those who were there will forget this in a moment? I don’t think so. I think it stuck with them as they moved on and it made them happy, at least for a time.
One other thing: I think true artists are the most generous and unselfish people on the face of this earth, and if that isn’t worth something in today’s “gimme’s” and “what do I get out of it’s” and “what’s in it for me’s”, then think again. Seriously. You are worth more than you’ll ever get monetary compensation for. But you will have made your mark on those around you – forever. Because Art is ephemeral and it lasts, and there is no equating the art you put out there. Don’t EVER let anyone squash you or stop you.
I hope I’m touching or moving or making some kind of difference in your lives. That’s my sole aim.
Because I care,
Robin
